Patek Philippe introduced the annual calendar in 1996, offering a practical alternative to the more complex perpetual calendar. The mechanism automatically recognizes months with 30 and 31 days, leaving the wearer with just one calendar adjustment each year, on March 1. A moon-phase display adds another layer of mechanical refinement, requiring correction only once every 122 years to remain aligned with the lunar cycle.

Crafted in 18kt rose gold, the ref. 4948R-001 is distinguished by its elegant case and lavish diamond setting. A total of 388 diamonds adorn the case, bezel, lugs, crown and buckle, each carefully positioned by hand. The finishing detail is especially impressive: minute grains of gold secure the stones, showcasing the painstaking work that goes into every element of the watch.

A mother of pearl dial brings warmth and iridescence to the design. Day and month subdials sit on either side of the dial’s center, while the moon-phase indicator and date display are stacked below it. The result is a balanced composition that remains legible despite its wealth of detail.
